I’ll be the first to admit, there are a lot of days I could do better with managing my time. Especially now that I don’t have children at home to care for, it’s easy for me to let the day get away from me. When I had children at home, my sense of responsibility for their wellbeing (we also homeschooled for 23 years) was often all the motivation I needed to stick to a daily routine and stay productive.

But whether you have children at home still or you’re an empty nester like me, sometimes we don’t even realize where we’re losing precious time and struggle to be productive at home.

5 Time-Wasters Stealing Your Joy at Home

Let’s talk about five sneaky time-wasters that may be draining your days — and how to reclaim your time.

1. Endless Scrolling on Your Phone

It starts innocently — you hop on your phone to check a recipe or respond to a text, and 30 minutes later you’re still there, lost in social media.

Endless scrolling creates a cycle of comparison and distraction, pulling you out of your real life and into everyone else’s highlight reel. Your home and heart need your attention — not constant noise from the outside world.

Quick Fix:

Set specific “scroll windows” during the day and stick to them. Consider keeping your phone in another room when you’re working on home tasks – this particular tip really helps me!

2. Over-Planning & Under-Doing

There’s nothing wrong with a good plan — but planning becomes a time-waster when you spend more time making lists than actually following through. Planning to be productive vs. actually be productive… Planning is good but DOING is better.

Over-planning tricks you into feeling productive while the real work waits. It can also create unnecessary pressure when your list is unrealistic – it’s a problem when your to do list is so long that you can’t possibly get everything done in any given day. Don’t set yourself up for failure from the start!

Quick Fix:

Start your day with a short, focused list — just 3-5 important tasks — and give yourself permission to call it a win when those are done. Progress, not perfection.

3. Saying Yes to Everything

From extra volunteer roles to unnecessary errands, saying “yes” too often stretches your time and energy thin. It’s okay to have boundaries and say no. You want to find a good balance between being helpful, having a servant’s heart, and recognizing that there are limits on how much you can actually do. One thing that helped me come to grips with this years ago was recognizing that just because something is good doesn’t mean God wants me to be the one to do it. Pray for discernment over your time!

Every yes is a no to something else — often your own rest, family time, or peaceful home rhythms.

Quick Fix:

Pause before committing to anything. Ask yourself: “Does this align with my priorities right now?” It’s okay to say no.

4. Decision Fatigue

Constantly asking yourself, “What’s for dinner?” or “What should I clean next?” wastes more time than you realize. These micro-decisions not only steal time, but they also quietly drain your energy. Your brain is working overtime, trying to sort through options, weigh priorities, and remember what you were supposed to do. By the end of the day, you’re not just physically tired — you’re mentally fried.

When you create simple systems — like a weekly meal plan, a cleaning rhythm, or a morning checklist — you remove those constant question marks from your day. Instead of wasting precious energy deciding what to do next, you can move forward with confidence, knowing the plan is already in place.

When your brain is overloaded with decisions all day, it’s harder to stay calm, focused, and intentional.

Quick Fix:

Create simple systems — like a weekly meal plan, a cleaning rhythm, and go-to routines. The fewer decisions you make, the more energy you’ll have for what matters.

5. Clutter (Physical & Mental)

Every pile of papers, every overstuffed closet, and every unfinished project quietly nags at your mind — even when you think you’re ignoring it.

Clutter creates visual and mental noise, making it harder to focus, relax, and feel at ease in your own home.

Quick Fix:

Tackle one small area at a time — a single drawer, one shelf, one corner of a room. Small wins add up, and each cleared space brings a little more peace. I recommend trying to declutter a little bit each day. Set a timer for 5, 10, or 15 minutes and tackle one small project.
