Tips for Summer Outdoor Entertaining

I can never decide if summer or winter or fall or spring are my favorite times of the year. There’s something so special about each season and summer offers so much in the way of warm weather and sunny days, that being outside feels like the perfect backdrop to most summer activities.

Summer really is the perfect time to take your gatherings outside and enjoy the warm weather with friends and family. For over a decade we’ve had two picnic tables in our front yard that we use on a weekly basis. Our yard is mostly front yard as we live on a mountain bluff and our backyard overlooks the small town below us. So, the front yard is where we spend time outside.

I love having friends and family over on a regular basis for meals, games, or even ice cream. Hanging out around the picnic tables is an easy way for me to host guests while keeping the indoors neat and tidy with very little after party cleanup.

Whether you’re planning a laid-back barbecue, an sweet garden party, or a fun-filled day by the pool (I wish we had a pool!!), your guests are sure to enjoy themselves. Hospitality isn’t about how fancy your home is or how much you spend but if you’re able to set a pretty or festive table, I would encourage you to do so. How you style your table, room, or setting, can set the tone for the gathering and even add to the festive and fun atmosphere.

Savor the Season: Your Guide to Summer Outdoor Entertaining

#1 Create a Welcoming Atmosphere

The first step to any fun outdoor gathering is setting the scene. Start with comfortable seating arrangements that encourage conversation. Think about mixing different types of seating, like cushioned chairs, benches, and even outdoor poufs to create a relaxed and inviting environment. Add some cozy blankets and throw pillows for when the evening chill sets in.

Lighting is also essential for creating ambiance. String lights are a classic choice for a reason—they’re versatile, easy to hang, and instantly make any space feel magical. Consider adding lanterns or LED candles on tables for a warm, inviting glow as the sun goes down.

#2 Keep Your Guests Comfortable

When you’re hosting guests outside you want to make sure there are plenty of shade options as much as possible. Sometimes you just have to work with what you have, but being mindful of the sun and heat is important. Whether it’s through sun umbrellas, a canopy tent, or a pergola. This will not only keep your guests cool but also protect them from the sun’s harsh rays.

Having a few portable fans or misters can also make a big difference, especially on particularly hot days. And don’t forget about the bugs—keep insect repellent and citronella candles on hand to ensure your guests can enjoy the evening without any unwanted interruptions.

#3 Delicious and Easy Dining

To make your life easier opt for a menu that is easy to prepare and serve. Alternatively, depending on the day or event, sometimes I’ll ask for others to bring dishes and we eat potluck style.

I usually set up a buffet-style spread so that guests can help themselves. Serving food this way creates a more relaxed atmosphere and is generally the easiest for the hostess. For drinks, have a variety of beverages for everyone to choose from and stay hydrated. Don’t forget to have plenty of ice on hand to keep everything chilled.

#4 Fun and Games

Our family loves games. Anytime we get together we make sure there are games to play. Classics like cornhole, giant Jenga, and bocce ball are always crowd-pleasers. If you have a pool, pool toys and floats can provide hours of entertainment. And it never hurts to set up a card table for card games or board games. A round of checkers anyone?

Music is another way you can add an air of fun to the festivities for any summer gathering. Create a playlist ahead of time with a mix of upbeat tunes and mellow tracks to set the perfect vibe throughout the day and into the night.

#5 Extra touches

Consider the small details like providing sunscreen for daytime events, or cozy blankets and a fire pit for cooler evenings. Even a simple gesture like a welcome drink or a small favor for guests to take home can make a lasting impression.

Really, you don’t have to do any of these things to have a fun gathering – the most important thing you can do is make your guests feel welcomed and valued. Anything extra you do is just icing on the cake!

Entertaining outdoors in the summer is all about embracing the season’s laid-back vibe and making the most of your outdoor space. With a little planning and a few thoughtful touches, you can create an unforgettable experience for your guests. So, fire up the grill, light those lanterns, and get ready to make the most of those long summer days and warm nights.
