March Homemaking Update: What Got Done and What Didn’t

I had plans to write an update earlier in the month and never got to it—so here it is, better late than never.

March was busy – we had our Eastern Kentucky Campmeeting for church. It’s a regional event we’ve been attending for the last 20 years. I always teach the beginners and the kindergarten class. The following week I went to New York City with my daughter Laura for spring break. That was a lot of fun!

After the New York trip I was definitely looking forward to being a home for a few weeks. I’m on the road quite a bit so having a few weeks at home was exciting. My days at home were slower. I took Marlowe for daily walks in the evenings and enjoyed cooking (and eating) some good home cooked meals. I’ve always enjoyed cooking but since becoming an empty nester it’s been a little harder for me. I’m finally getting better about cooking for two – although we do end up eating a lot of leftovers. I also share food with my sister-in-law, who lives a couple doors down from me. Her husband (my husband’s brother) passed away in December.

We got three or four more loads of wood delivered. I helped my husband drop them into our woodroom – we have a manhole cover in our garage floor that has a shoot into the wood room in our basement. I also canned a batch of blueberry jam since we found blueberries on a good deal at Kroger!

I didn’t get nearly as much done around the house as I had hoped but that’s okay. And while it wasn’t a month full of big wins, even small steps still count. That’s what I want to share with you today—what worked, what didn’t, and what I’m focusing on next.

March Homemaking Goals and Habits

1. Daily Walks & Health Habits
I kept up my 3-mile walks most days, and I’ve been working on making healthier meals—more fish, more vegetables, more whole grains. I also started paying attention to my fiber intake and making small changes to support heart health.

2. Slower Mornings
I’ve been trying not to rush in the mornings. I read, cook breakfast, and take my time before diving into work or cleaning. It’s helped me feel more focused during the day.

3. Homemaker’s Society Planning
I outlined April and May’s themes (Cultivating Home) and started prepping new resources for members—focused on gardening, home routines, and family rhythms.

4. Organzing the Attic
I had big plans of getting our lower attic cleaned out and while I did manage to get some of it done, I did not finish.

5. Home Cooked Meals
Okay, so I’ve always made from scratch meals for my family. We rarely ever eat out and I love making good home cooked meals – and eating them! Since my husband and I became empty nesters I’ve struggled a bit with cooking. I’m used to cooking for a large family so I end up making too much food a LOT. But I’m learning how to pair down the meals so that we don’t have as many leftovers. I’ve also been sharing food with with my sister-in-law or sometimes if we have a lot of leftovers I’ll send them down to my step son and his family who live right down the road too. What Didn’t Get Done

  • I didn’t check off as many projects as I hoped.
  • Some blog posts and updates didn’t make it to the site.
  • I had a couple of unfinished tasks that I’m carrying over into April.

But, that’s life. Sometimes we have big goals and we only meet some of them – or none of them – and that’s okay.

What’s Coming in April

April feels like a good time to reset. I’m planning to:

  • Finish the Spring Gardening blog series
  • Share new printable kits and planning pages inside the membership
  • Focus on home organization and family routines
  • Get back to more consistent blog posts and email updates (hopefully)

If You’re Feeling Behind

If March didn’t go the way you thought it would, you’re not alone. Just pick one thing to do this week that moves you in the right direction. You don’t need a perfect plan—you just need to keep going. Thanks for being here. I’m looking forward to a fresh start this month—and I hope you are too!
