3 Simple Habits to Keep Your Kitchen Clutter-Free

Tired of battling kitchen clutter? These three simple habits will help you maintain a clean, organized kitchen without the stress—because a functional space starts with small, consistent changes.

Y’all after Christmas my kitchen counters were sooo full of stuff. Extra baking supplies, jars, leftover snacks, extra storage containers, and more. Looking at all of that clutter is not on my list of favorite things. But what is on my list of favorite this: cooking for my large family and hanging out with them for 2-3 weeks over the holiday season. Having family here makes the mess worth it!

I’ve learned to take it all in stride. The thing about messes is they always get cleaned up. Sometimes it takes a little while, but it always gets done and there’s no reason to let it get to me. Having said that, I do want the mess cleaned up and gone in a reasonable amount of time. 🙂 That’s why I’ve been loving this month’s challenge on the Homemaker’s Society. Together we’re doing a 20 day Kitchen Reset Challenge!

And the holidays are one thing… day in and day out we want to keep the kitchen clutter at bay, and it’s a good idea to practice a few habits to keep things neat and orderly most of the time. After all, I much prefer working in a neat and tidy kitchen. And, I enjoy having people over more when my house feels mostly put together.

So, whether you’re preparing meals, hosting guests, or simply grabbing a cup of coffee in the morning, an organized kitchen can make everything feel easier. I mean, I don’t even like cooking in my kitchen unless it’s clean and if I’ve failed to clean it before the next meal, I try get it done before I cook again.

But let’s be honest: maintaining that level of order can feel like a challenge, especially when life gets busy – and even more so if you’re just naturally messy lol.

Want to know the secret? It’s not about perfection or massive cleaning sessions. The key to a functional, clutter-free kitchen is cultivating small, consistent habits that make a big impact over time. In this post, we’ll dive into three simple habits that will help you maintain order in your kitchen without stress or overwhelm.

Why Daily Habits Matter for a Clutter-Free Kitchen

Before we get into the habits, let’s talk about why they matter. Decluttering your kitchen in one big effort feels amazing, but without maintenance, the clutter has a sneaky way of creeping back. I’ll talk more about why clutter in your kitchen cause stress, anxiety, and a feeling overwhelm in another blog post, but for now let’s talk about little habits you can develop to help you overcome the clutter monster.

By building small habits into your routine, you’ll create a system that keeps your kitchen tidy day after day. These habits don’t require much time or effort, but they’ll save you countless hours in the long run. And the more you do them, the quicker and easier they get.

1. End Your Day with a Quick Countertop Reset

Your countertops are the heart of your kitchen—keep them clear, and the rest will follow.

Cluttered countertops are one of the biggest sources of frustration in any kitchen. When the counters are piled high with dishes, mail, or random gadgets, it’s hard to find space to prep or even cook. That’s why taking a few minutes to reset your countertops every evening is so powerful.

Here’s How to Do It:

  • Clear It Off: Take a quick inventory of what’s on your countertops and return any stray items to their proper place.
  • Wipe It Down: Use a damp cloth or all-purpose cleaner to wipe away crumbs, spills, and smudges.
  • Keep It Simple: Limit countertop decor to one or two items, like a bowl of fresh fruit or a vase of flowers, to maintain a clean and inviting look. Although, I’ll admit I have more than that, haha.

Waking up to a clean kitchen sets the tone for a productive day. It’s like giving yourself a fresh start every morning.

2. Adopt the “One In, One Out” Rule

For every item that enters your kitchen, let one go—it’s the easiest way to keep clutter in check.

The kitchen is one of the most-used spaces in your home, and it’s easy for items to pile up over time. From impulse gadget purchases to pantry staples that seemed like a good idea, kitchens can quickly become overcrowded. The “One In, One Out” rule is a simple way to ensure your kitchen stays manageable.

Here’s How to Apply It:

  • For Gadgets: Bought a new kitchen tool? Donate or discard an old one you no longer use.
  • For Pantry Items: If you add new food to your pantry, check for older items that need to be used or discarded.
  • For Dishes: Replace chipped or mismatched dishes with newer, more functional ones and donate the rest.

This habit prevents clutter from building up in the first place and ensures your kitchen is filled only with items you love and use.

3. Do a Weekly Reset

A little maintenance each week goes a long way in keeping your kitchen running smoothly.

Even with daily habits, the kitchen still needs some extra TLC every now and then. A weekly reset is a quick check-in that helps you address minor messes before they become overwhelming. Think of it as a mini decluttering session to keep everything in its place.

Here’s What to Include in Your Weekly Reset:

  • Scan for Expired Food: Go through your pantry, fridge, and freezer to toss expired or forgotten items. This is a great time to make your menu plan and use up food that needs to be used.
  • Tidy Your Zones: Reorganize your kitchen zones (like prep, cooking, or cleaning areas) to make sure everything is in its proper place.
  • Wipe Down Appliances: Give your stove, microwave, and refrigerator handles a quick clean for a fresh feel.

A weekly reset keeps your kitchen functional and prevents the need for big, time-consuming decluttering sessions.

Hi there, Katie! My Mama always taught me, to clean up as I go. While cooking, you put things away, as you use them. It really keeps the stress level down.
