Over the past couple of weeks, my girls and I have worked through nearly the entire house, preparing it for the holiday season. While I’d love to say that the thought of a clean house is always enough to motivate me, the truth is that it’s not always the case.

However, knowing that guests will soon be arriving—sometimes even staying overnight—is all the motivation I need to dive into deep cleaning. If that resonates with you, consider inviting someone over. You might be surprised how quickly it inspires you to spruce up your space!

Hospitality doesn’t require a perfect, magazine-worthy home. You can extend warmth and kindness regardless of how your home looks. But creating a neat and welcoming space is a ministry in itself. A tidy home can bring peace to weary souls and offer a sense of rest to all who enter, from friends and family to strangers.

Holiday Cleaning Checklist

Start your holiday cleaning with a few power-cleaning days or break it up into manageable chunks. Either way, a clean and organized home will make the holiday season more enjoyable for you and your loved ones.

Cleaning the Kitchen

  • Clean out the refrigerator and freezer.
  • Use up leftovers to make space for holiday cooking.
  • Clean the stove and oven; line with foil to catch spills.
  • Wipe down cupboards and the outside of appliances.
  • Mop floors.
  • Clean silverware caddies and drawers.
  • Simmer a potpourri on the stove for a cozy aroma.

Cleaning the Living Areas

  • Dust and polish wood furniture.
  • Vacuum carpets or rugs.
  • Declutter books, magazines, and other items.
  • Wash blankets and throws.

  • Declutter under the sink.
  • Wash shower curtains and bath rugs.
  • Clean decorative towels.
  • Scrub the sink, shower, bathtub, and toilet.
  • Restock with extra toilet paper, soap, and other supplies.
  • Mop floors.

Maintaining Your Home Before Christmas

As Christmas approaches, shift your focus from deep cleaning to maintaining a tidy space. Involve the whole family in daily upkeep:

  • Clean the kitchen after each meal.
  • Do a quick clutter sweep with a laundry basket.
  • Put all clutter away.
  • Wash, fold, and put away laundry.
  • Vacuum, sweep, and mop floors as needed.
  • Wipe down bathrooms each morning and evening.
  • Make beds and tidy bedrooms daily.
