January: Home Reset and Routines

I actually really love January. I love the quiet of it. I love the sense of possibility. And I love that feeling of a fresh start. In my house, we have just finished up our Christmas with family which basically consists of a full two weeks of kids and grandkids piled into our home with all of the happy chaos that comes with it. We spend the entire two weeks eating tons of food, talking, taking walks, going on hikes, watching movies, making Christmas crafts, and playing card games or board games late into the night – every single day.

We had 18 of us here in the house (plus 4 dogs and 3 cats) for the first week of Christmas – and I’ve had 12-15 every day of the second week. I love Christmas so much, and we had a wonderful holiday together – my heart is so full! This picture is with most of us, but for some reason, a couple of the kids were there when we took the photo:

There’s nothing more important to me than being with my family and serving them. I live for these times when my kids, who are all grown up and living their own lives (our youngest is in college), come home or I get to go visit them. I am so very blessed.

My son and his wife went home today and they left their three little ones with me and my husband for the next couple weeks, and I’m looking forward to leaning into January, resetting my home, while also spending time with my youngest grandkids.

There’s a verse I think about every January:

“His mercies are new every morning.” (Lamentations 3:22–23)

That verse feels especially fitting this time of year. Not because everything suddenly becomes easy or perfect, but because it reminds us that each day really is a chance to begin again — gently, faithfully, right where we are.

January feels like permission to start fresh without erasing everything that came before. There are days, weeks – and even years – when life feels hard. We never know what mishaps or hardships are right around the corner. But we also don’t know what joys are headed our way either. And I think that when we are always looking and expecting joy, we will find it – even in the midst of hardship.

This month at The Homemaker’s Society, our focus is Home Reset & Routines. It’s about easing back into daily life after the holidays and setting up a few simple rhythms that help your home feel steadier and more manageable. If you’d like to become a member, you can join here.

What a Home Reset Looks Like (In Real Life)

A home reset doesn’t have to be dramatic. Most of the time, it’s quiet and practical.

It might look like:

  • Clearing off a surface that’s been collecting clutter
  • Resetting one drawer, cabinet, or pantry shelf
  • Putting papers and lists back where you can actually find them
  • Letting go of routines that sounded good but never quite fit your life

These small resets don’t change everything overnight, but they do bring a sense of order and calm — and that makes a real difference in everyday life.

About Routines — Simple Ones

Routines don’t have to be rigid to be helpful. At their best, they’re just gentle rhythms that carry you through the day with a little less effort.

After the holidays, routines help bring things back to center. They give you something familiar to return to when days feel scattered or heavy.

This month, we’ll focus on routines that:

  • Fit real life
  • Allow for flexibility
  • Are easy to return to after an off day

Nothing fancy – it’s not about perfection. Just simple habits that support your home and the sweet people who live there.

What We’re Focusing on This Month

Throughout January, we’ll be working on:

  • Gentle home resets that don’t feel overwhelming
  • Kitchen and pantry routines that make feeding your family easier
  • Time management that makes sense for homemakers
  • Simplifying after the holidays
  • Feeding your family well without burning out

Think of this month as getting the basics back in place — the kind of foundations you can build on as the year unfolds.

A Fresh Start, One Morning at a Time

January doesn’t have to be rushed. It can be a month of small beginnings, steady habits, and renewed hope.

God’s mercies really are new every morning. And that means each day — even an ordinary one — is a chance to reset, regroup, and begin again.
