5 Things to Let Go of as a Homemaker

I always wanted to be a homemaker. When I had my first child, there was no question in my mind about what I wanted to do. I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. If you’ve read my story, you know that I became a mom at the young age of 15 to a sweet baby boy in 1991. I’ve been a stay-at-home mom, wife, and homemaker ever since. Today I’m sharing 5 things to let go of as a homemaker if you want to experience more contentment in your role at home.

Making a home is about creating an atmosphere where love and laughter abound. The sweetest moments in life are often the most simple, like sharing morning coffee under the comfort of a blanket in your favorite cozy spot or cheering and laughing with your kids around the game table on family game night.

As it has been said, “Home is not a place, it’s a feeling” – a sentiment that captures both the warmth of being surrounded by those we love most while enjoying the cozy comforts of our own space. Every piece of homemaking contributes to this special feeling, so pour some love and care into what makes up your little corner of the world – you deserve it!

There are things we do sometimes as homemakers that don’t serve us well. Having the right mindset as a homemaker will help you enjoy your work at home more and you’ll find more fulfillment in your daily tasks.

There’s nothing that brings me more contentment and joy than serving my family in our home. I have loved being a homemaker, but that doesn’t mean it was always easy. With time and experience, I’ve learned that there are certain things I need to let go of in order to be the best homemaker I can be.

5 Things to Let Go of as a Homemaker

As a homemaker, you know that managing the everyday tasks of home life can be overwhelming. From grocery shopping to laundry and everything in between, it’s easy for responsibilities to pile up. Learning how to let go of thoughts and habits that do not serve you is key to both your physical and emotional well-being.

#1 Chasing perfection.

Don’t let perfectionism keep you from enjoying your homemaking journey. Perfection isn’t possible this side of heaven. You don’t have to be a perfect homemaker to create a space that feels warm and welcoming for your family and friends.

#2 Saying “I’m just a homemaker.”

The value of a homemaker may be undervalued in our society, but don’t ever think that the work you do inside the walls of your home is anything less than noble and holy.

#3 Comparing yourself to others.

Comparison is the thief of joy. Instagram makes it so easy to feel like you aren’t doing enough. Don’t compare your homemaking skills, accomplishments, or lifestyle to others. Instead, continue growing and learning as a homemaker and doing the work you have been called to do.

#4 Feeling like you need to keep up with every decor trend.

Trends come and go, but making a home is about creating a place of comfort and peace. Invest in pieces that you truly love and make your space uniquely yours. The way your home is decorated is much less important than the way people feel when they’re in your home.

I’ve had the same couches in my living room for nearly 20 years now. We raised a whole passel of children on these couches. As tempting as it is sometimes to replace old furniture, it’s not always practical or necessary. And that’s okay.

#5 Unrealistic expectations.

As a young homemaker I put a lot of pressure on myself to do everything and to do everything well. But high expectations can be a form of perfectionism. Give yourself grace.

Finding contentment at home is about more than the tasks at hand. It’s about developing a mindset and attitude that will bring you joy and fulfillment in your journey as a homemaker. Let go of things that no longer serve you and focus on the important things – love, grace, laughter, self-care, and growth.

Creating a balance between a clean and tidy home without feeling overwhelmed is key. When you have the right perspective, homemaking can be a rewarding journey!

If you can find joy in homemaking, it will make all the difference. These five things are a great place to start if you want to reframe your mindset and enjoy this season of life.

  1. I love this post 🙂 My home is anything but recent decor trends. I like simple so I can clean quickly. It is comfy so people can come in take their shoes off and sit a while to just visit. My two bathrooms are still 50’s – 60’s style with colored tile on the floor and walls and colored sink, tub and toilet. It works for me 🙂 We’ve lived in this house for 9 years and I still have yet to paint over the 80’s wallpaper in the kitchen. I figure people come to see me and my husband, not my house.

    1. Hi Lou Ann! I’m so glad you’re here. Yes! I agree. Comfy and clean is good and really all that matters! We live in such a consumer crazy society it’s easy sometimes to feel like we need to do more.
