5 Tips: How to Create a Home You Love
Have you ever walked into someone’s home and felt immediately at ease and comfortable? There’s something special about a well-designed, cozy home that just feels like it was made for you. If you’re looking to create a space like this in your own home, here are five tips to create a home you love.
Lately, I’ve really been enjoying finding new to me, thrifted pieces of art and furniture for my home. It’s something I used to do every weekend when I was in my early 20s. But as I got busier raising and homeschooling a houseful of kids there wasn’t time or money to do much of that sort of thing.
Homemaking makes me so happy and I love puttering around the house, decorating and cleaning, and organizing. Creating a home you love is a natural part of homemaking.
A few throwback photos to our homeschooling days:
And while I’m currently raising four grandkids full-time, I am not homeschooling them, so my days are often free to do the things I enjoy doing like visiting my favorite antique shops.
Thrifting and Layering
As I look around my home, I’m realizing just how much joy and comfort these little thrifted pieces have brought into our lives. When my grown children came home for Christmas, the house looked so cozy and welcoming. Laura will be coming home next week for a couple of days and it’s these moments that I most look forward to these days. I love having the house cozy when my kids come home!
Having my youngest daughter in college has been a huge adjustment for me. I spent the last 30+ years being a full-time, stay-at-home mom and it’s been hard to get used to the quiet days.
Thrifting and antiquing allow me to add layers to my home over time so that I’m always adding special touches to each room. Having a rich collection of curated items that bring warmth and personality to my home creates that inviting atmosphere that I so desire my home to have.
I’ve never actually had the money to jump on decor trends, so my house hasn’t changed much over the last 20 years that we’ve lived here. Well, besides the fact that we spent two years beginning in 2017 renovating the house. Structurally, there has been some change but not that much.
I’ve had most of the same furniture in my house since we first bought it 20 years ago. And that’s okay because it’s comfortable, and we invested in good pieces that I still love.
And that’s really the key – purchase large furniture pieces that are timeless and you can more easily change the look of your decor with art and other decor pieces that are less expensive.
When working to create a cozy atmosphere in your home, focus on the details. A few simple touches can really bring your space together and make it feel inviting. This could include anything from switching out old knobs on a dresser to adding some decorative throw pillows or blankets. Even little things like adding plants or artwork can help bring life and personality into your space.
Designer Martina Mondadori said, “You keep adding layers as time goes by. I always say you never want your home to be completely done to the nines when you walk into it.”
5 Tips for Creating a Home You Love
Creating a home you love doesn’t have to be expensive or take a lot of time; it just takes some thoughtful planning and creative styling! So if you’re looking to add a special touch to your home, here are a few tips to help you create a home that’s comfortable and inviting:
1. Invest in furniture pieces that will last.
You don’t have to buy the most expensive items but look for quality pieces that are constructed well and made of materials like wood, metal, or leather. I love finding good, solid pieces of vintage furniture at antique stores because the quality stands the test of time – unlike much of the mass-produced furniture made today.
2. Choose artwork and decor pieces that speak to your style.
Whether you prefer vintage items, modern art, or something in between, there are plenty of options for you to choose from.
3. Accessorize with items that have sentimental value to you.
Items like family photos, souvenirs from trips, or hand-me-down decor can really make a room feel complete.
4. Make sure everything has a place.
Having an uncluttered home goes a long way to creating a warm and cozy environment. And while some clutter is okay – having a lot of clutter makes a room feel disorganized and can even make people feel more stressed.
5. Personalize your space.
Adding personal touches—like photos of family or friends—can help turn any room into one that feels fresh and inviting without having to spend too much money. You can also incorporate free elements from nature such as flowers or cut branches and houseplants for an added sense of comfort, warmth, and relaxation.
Conclusion
Creating the perfect home doesn’t have to be expensive but it does take time. You just need a bit of creativity and some patience! With these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way toward creating the cozy atmosphere that everyone dreams of having in their own homes.
