Why I Love Homemaking: Cultivating a Homemaking Mindset
When it comes to homemaking, there are a lot of misconceptions out there. Some people think that it’s a boring, monotonous job with no real payoff. The truth is, homemaking can be a fun, rewarding experience – it’s really about your mindset! Today I’m talking about why I love homemaking and how you can cultivate a homemaking mindset.
I’ve always loved the idea of homemaking. When I was a little girl, I loved playing house and pretending to cook and clean. I would spend hours looking at house plans and reading my mom’s Country Living magazines and her Better Homes and Garden magazines.
I dreamed of the house I would one day own and the family I would one day have. I wanted to be a homemaker.
I Love the Art of Homemaking
As I got older, I realized that homemaking is so much more than just cooking and cleaning. It’s about creating a warm and inviting space for your family and friends. It’s about taking care of your home so that your family feels loved and cared for. And it’s about finding joy in the everyday tasks that keep your home running smoothly.
I’ve learned that homemaking is a unique combination of art and science, and I enjoy the challenge of continuously learning new things about how to be a better homemaker.
Whether it’s trying out a new recipe or figuring out the most efficient way to do laundry, I love finding new ways to make homemaking easier and more enjoyable. And I’m grateful to live in a time where there are so many resources available to help us modern homemakers succeed!
From online forums – like my Facebook group: The Ministry of Homemaking to YouTube tutorials, there’s no shortage of advice and support available when we need it. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed by homemaking or if you’re simply looking for some inspiration, know that you’re not alone.
There are countless others who are on this journey with you, and we’re all cheering each other on as we strive to create beautiful, functional homes that we love coming back to every day.
The homemaking community is full of amazing women who are passionate about making their homes a haven for their families. I’m so grateful to be part of this community and to have found so much joy in homemaking.
The Bible tells us that women are to be keepers at home and I believe that homemaking is a sacred calling.
Keepers at Home
Titus 2:3-5 says: ” Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, homemakers, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.”
As Christian women, we are called to a higher standard when it comes to homemaking. We are called to reflect the light of Christ in our homes through our attitudes and the Gospel is preached not so much in words but in our everyday actions of love and care for our family members

The Ministry of Homemaking
As Christian homemakers, we have the opportunity to reflect God’s love in our homes through the way we care for our families. Homemaking is a sacred calling and I believe that it is an incredibly important ministry.
When we take the time to create a happy, organized home, we are blessing our families. Homemaking isn’t always easy, but it is so, so worth it!

It saddens me that our society today is so bitter and angry toward the idea of homemaking and ultimately the family. This bitterness I hear perpetuated so often on social media where the traditional constructs of home are being torn down can feel very discouraging.
It always surprises me when I hear people describe the profession of homemaking as oppression – as though what I do within the walls of my home is somehow holding me back from my true potential or purpose in life. I love being a homemaker.
I see so much beauty in the role of a homemaker.
10 Reasons I Love Homemaking
I personally love traditional roles. I am not bothered in any way and I do not feel insulted by the idea that I am a full-time homemaker. I always wanted to be a wife and mom – and a homemaker. It’s who I am. It’s what brings me joy. I see my calling to be a homemaker elevated through Scripture and the calling I feel God put in my heart.
1. Homemaking allows me to be creative.
One reason I enjoy homemaking is that it allows me to be creative. I can decorate my home to reflect my personal style, and I can cook meals that are delicious and nutritious. Just like the Proverbs 31 woman who demonstrates her creativity within her home – I too enjoy using my creativity to bless my family.
2. I truly enjoy serving my family.
Another reason I love homemaking is that it gives me the opportunity to serve those I love most. My husband and children are the recipients of my homemaking efforts, and I take great joy in serving them.
Jesus came to serve, and He calls us to do the same. When we serve our families selflessly, we are reflecting His love for us.
3. I can show others hospitality in my home.
Homemaking also allows me to use my gifts and talents to bless others. I enjoy hosting parties and gatherings, and I love being able to use my home as a place of hospitality.
The Bible tells us to show hospitality to one another, and I believe that homemaking is the perfect platform for doing just that.
“Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Hebrews 13:2
4. There are always new things to learn.
One of the things I love about homemaking is that I never stop learning. Every day I discover something new that I can do to make my home a special place for my kids and my husband.
Whether it’s trying a new recipe, learning a new sewing technique, or finding a new way to organize our belongings, I’m always discovering new ways to improve our home.
5. I was able to spend every day with my kids.
My youngest daughter has left for college and while she’s not completely independent, we are certainly getting close. As my children grew, my role as a full-time homemaker evolved as well. I got to help them with their homeschooling, teach them valuable life skills, and watch them grow into independent young adults.
It’s truly rewarding work, and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to be a stay-at-home mom to my kids.
6. I get to make our home uniquely ours.
I am constantly trying to find new ways to make my home a special place for my kids and my husband. I want them to feel comfortable and safe when they are here, and I want to be able to offer them a variety of activities that will help them grow and learn.
I also enjoy the challenge of decorating our home in a way that feels cozy and welcoming. Whether it is adding a new paint color to the walls or choosing new furniture or picking out the perfect piece of artwork, I get a lot of satisfaction out of making my home look its best.
7. I can learn from others who have gone before me.
Part of what makes homemaking so special is the opportunity it gives us to connect with other women who have gone before us. Through their stories and recipes, I can gain insight and wisdom that helps me in my own journey as a homemaker.
There are so many inspiring books about homemaking, and I often find myself reading several at a time. I like to read books about organization, decorating, and relationships – plus cookbooks are so fun to peruse!
I find that reading about other women’s experiences helps me to feel less alone in my own journey as a homemaker. It also gives me new ideas and perspectives that I can use in my own kitchen and home.
8. Homemaking gives me a sense of accomplishment.
Homemaking also gives me a sense of accomplishment. Every time I deep clean the kitchen or fold a load of laundry, I feel like I’ve accomplished something important. These small tasks may not seem like much, but they add up to a big difference in the overall appearance and functioning of our home.
And, at the end of the day, I love being able to look around and see all that I’ve accomplished. It’s a great feeling to know that I’ve made a positive difference in my home and in the lives of my family.
9. I love homemaking because I get to make my own schedule.
I don’t have an employer telling me what to do and when to do it. As a full-time homemaker, I get to set my own hours and work at my own pace.
Of course, there are always tasks that need to be done around the house – laundry, dishes, sweeping, etc. But I can find a way to fit those into my day without feeling like I’m being controlled by them.
Being a homemaker means I get to be flexible. When my daughter-in-law was sick in the hospital last month, I was able to drop everything and run down to Florida to stay with my son and help with the boys while she recovered. I stayed for a whole week and it was wonderful. What precious memories were made – and all because I can be flexible. I’m not tied down to someone else’s schedule.
10. I get to care for my family in a tangible way.
Finally, I love homemaking because it allows me to care for my family in a tangible way. Whether I’m cooking a meal or wiping down the counters, I know that I am doing something to make my home a happy and welcoming place for my loved ones.
I love preparing delicious meals every day for my family. It brings me such delight when they bite into a homemade biscuit or sit down to a requested, favorite dish.
I love being able to take care of my family’s basic needs on a daily basis, ensuring they have what they need – emotionally and physically.
I’ll never forget Laura telling her siblings about the time she was sick and I brought her hot tea and medicine before bed. And when she woke up in the middle of the night, there on the nightstand was another dose of NyQuil just waiting for her. Then, when she woke up in the morning there was another cup of tea and medicine waiting.
And she felt so loved.
I had crept in while she slept so as to not bother her. And it brought me so much joy that she felt loved by my small actions.
That’s really the heart of homemaking.
Cultivating a Homemaking Mindset
Modern homemaking is just as important as it was 30, 40, 50 – even 100 years ago. Women today have been taught that homemaking is drudgery. It saddens my heart. Homemaking is a high and noble calling. It is an important job. Just because it doesn’t bring in an income, doesn’t mean it isn’t significant.
Cultivating a homemaking mindset begins with changing the way we think about homemaking. We need to see it as an important job that contributes to the well-being of our families and society as a whole.
Here are a few ways we can begin to change our mindset about homemaking:
1. Acknowledge that homemaking is a real job. It isn’t easy and it certainly isn’t always fun. But it is important work that deserves our attention and respect.
2. Give yourself permission to be a homemaker. You don’t need anyone’s permission but your own. So give yourself permission to focus on homemaking and caring for your home and family.
3. Learn as much as you can about homemaking. Read books, take classes, talk to other homemakers. The more you know about homemaking, the better you’ll be at it. And the more you’ll enjoy it.
I have so many resources available for you to use right here on A Virtuous Woman!
4. Find a homemaking mentor. A mentor is someone who can teach you the ropes, give you advice, and encourage you in your homemaking journey. If you don’t have a mentor, look for a homemaking group or club that you can join. In our county, we still have monthly homemaking club meetings at the local extension office. Perhaps your county has one too.
5. View homemaking as a privilege. Homemaking is a privilege not everyone has. If you are able to stay at home and care for your home and family, consider yourself fortunate.
6. Recognize that you don’t have to do anything. You don’t have to do the laundry. You don’t have to cook homemade meals. You don’t have to clean the bathroom. You don’t have to wash the dishes.
Instead of feeling resentment or having thoughts like:
“Why do I always have to clean the kitchen?” or “Why can’t someone else do the laundry for a change?”
You can change your mindset and change your thoughts – and ultimately change your life:
“I love knowing my family has clean laundry in their drawers. I love who I am as a homemaker. I am selfless and there is joy in serving.”
If you’re feeling called to full-time homemaking, I encourage you to embrace it! It is a noble and important calling. There’s nothing to be ashamed about if you are a homemaker – you are doing an important work!
There are so many ways to be a successful homemaker, and there is no one right way to do it. The most important thing is to focus on your heart attitude. Are you serving with a joyful heart? Is your home a place of peace and rest? These are the things that matter most.
So whatever stage of homemaking you’re in, know that you are doing important work. Keep pressing on, and don’t give up! You’ve got this! I’m here to help.
