May Bucket List for Homemakers
Here’s a closer look at each item on the May Bucket List, with a few suggestions for how to fit them into your routine. These ideas are meant to be practical and realistic, but I don’t want you to feel like you have to do everything on the list! No extra pressure, just simple steps you can take throughout the month.
#1 Plant Something You’ll Eat This Summer
You don’t need a big garden. Start with one pot of herbs, a tomato plant in a raised bed, or even a hanging basket of strawberries. The goal is to grow something you’ll actually use.
#2 Host a Backyard BBQ
Keep it simple. Invite a few friends or neighbors and serve easy food—hot dogs, burgers, or even a potluck. Use paper plates. The focus is hospitality, not perfection.
#3 Pick One Area to Deep Clean
Choose one space you’ve been ignoring. It could be the coat closet, under the sink, or the top of the fridge. Set a timer for 20 or 30 minutes and tackle just that area.
#4 Create a Simple Morning Routine
Your morning doesn’t need to be complicated. Choose three things you can do each day—like making your bed, unloading the dishwasher, and reading a short devotional. Write them down and post the list where you’ll see it.
#5 Prepare for the Sabbath
Use Friday to tidy your home, prep meals, and finish up laundry so you can welcome Sabbath rest without a long to-do list. Even a few small steps can make your home feel more peaceful when the sun sets.
#6 Write and Mail a Note Card to Someone
Think of someone who could use encouragement and send a quick handwritten note. It doesn’t have to be long—just a few kind words can go a long way.
#7 Visit a Farmer’s Market
Support local farmers and pick up something fresh and in season. Berries, lettuces, herbs, and flowers are common in May. It’s also a good way to get inspired for meal planning.
#8 Read a Book Outside in the Sunshine
Take your book and a chair or blanket outside for at least 15 minutes. No phone, no multitasking—just quiet time with a good book and fresh air.
#9 Have a Phone-Free Afternoon
Turn your phone off or put it in another room. Use the time to bake, clean, work in the garden, or simply rest. You’ll be surprised how much more you notice when you’re not checking notifications.
#10 Try a Sunday Reset Routine
Spend a little time on Sunday afternoon getting ready for the week. This might mean folding a load of laundry, writing a quick meal plan, or picking up the main living areas.
#11 Spend One Hour Outside Each Day
Break it into smaller chunks if needed—twenty minutes in the morning, twenty after lunch, and twenty before dinner. Walk around the yard, pull weeds, or sit on the porch. Fresh air can make a big difference in your mood and energy.
#12 Bake Something From Scratch
Whether it’s bread, muffins, or a simple batch of cookies, baking from scratch gives you something homemade to enjoy and share. If you’re short on time, go for a one-bowl recipe.
