How to Refresh Your Home & Routines for Spring
There’s something about May that makes me want to throw open every window in the house, drag things out of closets, and start fresh. Maybe it’s the longer days. Maybe it’s the smell of things finally growing again. Whatever it is, I’ve learned to lean into that feeling instead of letting it fizzle out by the second week of the month.

We were still wearing sweaters on May 2nd and sitting by the fire, but the last couple of days have been a little warmer here in southeast Kentucky. I’m so thankful for the warmer weather and I’ve been putting in my little garden which gives me a lot of joy.
Refreshing Your Home and Routines for Spring
Today I want to share a simple May reset — not an overwhelming overhaul, but a intentional refresh that touches your home, your routines, and your heart.
Start With a Walk-Through
Before you do a single thing, I want you to walk through your home slowly. Not with a trash bag and a checklist — just look. Notice what feels heavy, cluttered, or out of season. Notice what brings you joy. This little habit changed the way I approach every season, because it helps me work with my home instead of just reacting to it.
It can be easy to get so used to the way your home looks that you stop noticing piles of clutter, dust bunnies, and dingy walls. Take the time to look around your home with fresh eyes. How would a guest see your home?
Ask yourself: What needs to go? What needs attention? What just needs a good cleaning?
Write it down. Even a rough list on the back of an envelope is enough to get started.
Reset Your Rhythms
Spring has a way of disrupting routines — school schedules shift, the weather pulls everyone outside, and somehow the dishes still need doing. If your daily rhythm has felt off lately, May is a wonderful time to see what’s working and what’s not.
You don’t need a perfect system. You need a reliable one.
A few things worth thinking about this month:
- Your morning anchor (even 15 quiet minutes before the house wakes up makes a difference)
- Your evening tidy (a 10-minute reset before bed keeps mornings from starting in chaos)
- Your weekly rhythm (which days do you cook ahead, clean, grocery shop?)
Don’t try to overhaul everything at once. Pick one rhythm to strengthen this month and let the rest follow.
Freshen Up Your Spaces
A spring refresh doesn’t have to cost money or take a whole weekend. Some of the most effective things are the simplest:
- Swap out heavy blankets and dark throw pillows for lighter ones
- Move furniture if something has been bothering you — trust your instinct
- Bring something living inside like flowers of a potted plant (a jar of wildflowers from the yard or across the road counts)
- Deep clean one neglected spot — the top of the refrigerator, the entry closet, or behind the couch
- Open the windows, even for an hour, and let the air move through (this is my favorite)
Your home responds to your attention. Even small acts of care make a space feel renewed.
Tend to the Practical Things
May is also a good month to take care of a few practical homemaking tasks before summer arrives:
- Check your pantry and freezer — what needs to be used up before summer produce comes in?
- Look over your budget — did spring spending sneak up on you?
- Plan your garden, even if it’s just a pot of herbs on the porch
- Pull out summer clothes and put winter things away properly (not just shoved somewhere)
- Check in on your household notebook — is anything outdated or missing?
None of these have to happen in one day. That’s what the whole month is for.

A Word for the Weary Homemaker
If you’re reading this feeling behind, overwhelmed, or like everyone else has it more together than you — I want you to know this: the work you do every day matters, even when it doesn’t feel like it.
“She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.” — Proverbs 31:27
That verse has never struck me as a standard to live up to. It’s always felt more like a description of a woman who is paying attention — to her home, her people, her God. That’s all any of us are trying to do.
