Preserving a Legacy of Family, Faith, and Food – November 1 – December 31

Sunday night we came home from our weekend camp out and I was tempted to catch up on work that needed to be done. But then, my daughter came in the room and said, “I’m bored.”

So instead of catching up on work I snuggled down on my bed with my girls surrounding me and we talked. And we laughed. And we made a story up. You know that game where each person adds to the story as you go around the circle? Yeah. It was so much fun. The story was crazy, silly, and made us laugh. And my “work” was still there the next morning when I woke up.

Do you enjoy being with your children? I know a lot of moms who are driven crazy by their kids. They look for every opportunity to get away for “peace and quiet.” I want to encourage you to enjoy your children. Childhood is fleeting. Is disappears like the wind and before you know it, they are grown and living their own lives.

Children long for you to talk to them, laugh with them, look them in the eye and show them you really do care. They want to know they are important, that they matter.

Often as moms, we have a million and one things on our minds, There’s so much to do and so little time to do it. And when our children come to us with their requests or their questions or their comments, we listen with only half an ear. I want to encourage you to be “present” with your kids. You are raising the next generation of Christ’s children. They need you to “be” there for them.

When we talk to our kids and really listen, it’s amazing the things we learn about them. For years my girls have spent the bedtime hour talking to me, pouring out their ideas and tidbits about their day.

Sometimes it takes what seems like forever to actually tuck them in bed at night. But I wouldn’t trade anything for those moments. My teens still like to talk to me. I want them to talk to me. But they wouldn’t share with me the way they do if I didn’t take the time to really listen to them.

  1. Love your post. A great read. As a mother of five, I feel torn in many directions but all and all, my kids know I’m always there for them in any way if they need me.. and I LOVE our little talks (big ones too).

  2. Hi Melissa mother of 3 and one, he was my husband baby boy who came to live with us, but loved him the same, and every town I lived in was the town kids mom, the neighborhood mom, I love the children deeply, altho I’d have to admit, I wasn’t always there to my own shame, reading this now the other side of raising children I must say, you’re right on here in saying “take the time to listen’ but I met the LORD only half way through their teenage years and chaos, what a privilage to be a mother! God Bless and thanks for your blog spot, very encouraging.
