18 Summers

18 summers. It’s all we get.

When you think about it, childhood is so very fleeting.

When your children are little and the days are long and hard, you think it will last forever. You can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. And then one day, you realize that your baby is no longer a baby.

My kids are now ages 26, 22, 20, 16, and 13.

My son, James, is married.

My daughter, Sarah, is engaged.

My daughter, Emily, is leaving for college.

Hannah and Laura have just a few more summers before they too will set out on their own lives, their own journey.

I want to soak up every moment of the next few years. I want to enjoy this summer and treasure the moments. I want to pursue simplicity and find joy.

I’m setting goals for this summer. Goals to make each day count. Not by checking off a to do list every day. Not by feeling proud of my own productivity.

No, I plan to fill this summer with games, horse rides, afternoons at the pool, weekend picnics, and family movie nights. I want to document each activity so that later when the days are gone I have something to remember them by.
