Scotch Shortbread (An Old Recipe Worth Bringing Back)

A while back I wandered into an antique store, and I came home with an old community cookbook titled Vintage Vicksburg. You know the kind. Spiral bound. A little food-stained. Recipes typed up by women whose names you’ll never know, credited only as “Mrs. Glenn Taylor” or “Mrs. George Rogers, Jr.”

I flipped through it slow, the way you do with something that feels like it’s been waiting for you. And this Scotch shortbread recipe stopped me. Four ingredients. No fuss. The kind of thing a grandmother would make on a Tuesday without thinking twice about it.

So simple you’ll wonder why you haven’t made it before.

Why I Love a Recipe Like This

There’s nothing trendy about shortbread. No fancy technique, no ingredient you have to special-order. Just butter, flour, cornstarch, and sugar, pressed into a pan and baked until it’s golden at the edges.

That’s what I love about old recipes like this one. They were written by women who didn’t have time for anything complicated. They had children underfoot and floors to sweep and supper to get on the table. Shortbread was something you could make between everything else — and still set out proudly for company.

It’s the kind of recipe that works for a weekday treat with coffee, a holiday dessert table, or a little tin of cookies for a neighbor who’s had a hard week.

The Work Nobody Sees

While I was reading through that old cookbook, I kept coming back to a verse I’ve read a thousand times.

Colossians 3:23 says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”

I always understood that verse in a general sense. Work hard. Do your best. But it took me years — years of dishes and diapers and days that looked the same as the one before — to understand what “whatever you do” was actually asking of me.

It means sweeping a floor that will just get dirty again tomorrow.

It means making a bed you’ll unmake again tonight.

It means pressing a simple shortbread dough into a pan, not because anyone’s watching, but because this is the work God has given you today.

He sees the unseen work of your hands. And He honors it — even when no one else notices it was done at all.
